Abstract

Living up to high performance expectations, especially at the beginning of one's military career, makes for much easier going lifelong. The sentiment 'back-in-the-day' was along the lines of 'the tougher the better. Let's see what these cadets are made of.' RELATED COMMENTS CAPPT Les High (as an Ensign back on the TANEY in Alameda, CA n 1946) writes, "My CO was rough and touch but perfect for me for I learned a lot from him but especially the value of running a taut ship. He loved to challenge me. I was only 5'7" and weighed 143 lbs. He made me coxswain of the #1 pulling boat (with steering oar) which was the "Man Overboard" responder and the first boat over the side for "Abandon Ship Drills" and the last to be retrieved. He loved my spirit and the tougher he made it the more I loved it. So many people helped mold me as a CG Officer and I loved having all of them influencing my career.
