Abstract

Les High describes how one of his classmates was killed, mistakenly, by a crew member on a LORAN station after switching bunks with an enlisted man who was the intended target of the killer. Wrong decisions and the lack of right ones can get people hurt. The Coast Guard mission can be very dangerous, sometimes in ways unforeseen. There is no substitute for good order and discipline. A good leader sets the example to keep his people sharp and safe. Ninety-eight year old Les High recalls a fatal lapse in leadership of a classmate from an incident seventy-eight years ago in the South Pacific while on LORAN Station on the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
