Abstract
Volume I Running Light (1930-1931) was donated to the Alumni Association in 1999 by CAPT Neil F. Kendall '58 who had inherited it from RADM Richard D Schmidtman '32 - his father-in-law. The President of the Alumni Association at that time was CDR Jim White '65, who posted news of the donation in the April 1999 Bulletin. Jim wrote,
"Prior to entering the Coast Guard Academy, Admiral Schmidtman served as a tour guide in the Washington, DC area and would often visit Annapolis. During those visits he learned that our sister Academy had an information book for cadets. Therefore, when he became a Second Class cadet (as Chairman of the Running Light Committee), he prepared a similar book for the incoming class. Thus the tradition began."
In that same April 1999 Bulletin, RADM Schmidtman '58 writes,
"When we entered the Academy, there was no Plebe Bible, such as both the Naval Academy (Reef Points) and the military Academy (Bugle Notes) had. It was in the Spring of 1930 that I went to Lee Baker, who was Commandant of Cadets, and got his permission and support to start a Swab Bible for our Academy. I persuaded a group of classmates to help and using Reef Points and Bugle Notes as guides, we producted Running Light."
