Abstract

ADM Jim Loy, 36th Commandant 1998 - 2002, retells his story of a first vivid leadership lesson learned during a nightmarish, topsy-turvey Ocean Station Bravo patrol in the North Atlantic as an Ensign on his watch aboard USCGC Absecon in 1965. ADM Loy explains the difficulty and danger of making the downwind 180 degree turn in high winds and heavy seas. He also explains the lessons of mentoring and leadership that were brought on by his CO's quiet counsel.
