Abstract

Russ Hebert (Class of '65) reflects on how his fraternizing too much with his aft damage control party during informal training exercises and while ashore had such a material adverse affect on his ability to lead them when a true crises arose. On the flip side, Russ relates how he solved the problem by more formalizing these ongoing interpersonal relationships with more structured training sessions as well as daily interaction aboard ship and ashore. Searching out that thin line between informal friendliness and damaging fraternization can be difficult especially for fresh aboard junior officers.
