Tradition has a lot to do with success. The good lord is telling us to help people. Enthusiasm, positivity and empathy are important to develop. You have to do something that is significantly correct and then people will respect you. If you are always crowding what is right, people will think you are always trying to get out of the job. You have to give your all. You can't short shrift. People have to be told to get with it if that is not what they are doing. You can mentor up the ladder too. Set a standard for who you are and pretty soon people know you are that guy.
